PDF Text, Images and Vectors: Why Objects Behave Differently

A PDF is an ordered stack of objects

What looks like one visual page can contain separate text runs, image files, vector paths, clipping masks and nested forms. The order matters: one object can sit behind another, and a visible logo can contain both raster and vector parts.

Text layers

Selectable PDF text can often be located as individual runs or grouped text blocks. Replacing it accurately requires preserving the position, size, line height and the practical width of the original text. Some embedded fonts cannot be reused outside the source PDF, so an editor must be honest when it uses a visual substitute.

Raster images

Photos, scanned signatures and many logos are image XObjects. When the source exposes an independent image object, removing that object can be a genuine structural operation rather than a white rectangle drawn above it.

Vectors and table bands

Grey stripes, QR modules, rules and icons are often vector paths. They are not image files. Covering one with white changes the appearance only; structural removal needs to target the original vector instructions safely.

Compound objects

A logo can be a nested form containing a raster wordmark and vector artwork. Removing only one part gives a broken result. This is why a reliable editor analyses the object structure first and uses a conservative fallback when the exact target cannot be isolated safely.

What to look for before removing an object

• Is the target a selectable text block, image, vector group or compound form?
• Does it overlap content that should remain?
• Is the operation a visual cover or a structural rewrite?
• Can the result be reviewed before export?
